Parents
Q. How old does my child have to be?
A. Ages 7-17 are welcome and will need a parent to sign a permission slip. Ages 13 and under must be accompanied by a parent during the session.
Q. How long are sessions?
A. Currently, sessions are from 9:00am to 12pm on chosen Saturdays.
Q. What does attendance cost?
A. Attending CoderDojo sessions is free. Thanks to our volunteers and sponsors.
Q. Where are sessions located?
A. Currently, sessions are held at KC STEM Alliance, located at 4825 Troost Ave #124, Kansas City, MO 64110.
Q. Do I need to bring anything?
A. Yes, your child should come with a wifi-enabled laptop, preferably with Google Chrome installed, and any accessories(mice, keyboard, etc) your child may need.
Q. Do I have to stay with my child for the session?
A. You need to be present to check in with your child at the beginning of every session. If your child is 13 or younger, your presence is required throughout. All parents and caregivers are welcome to stay and learn with their child.
Q. Does my child need prior knowledge to attend?
A. No. Kids can learn from the ground up.
Q. My child is looking for more advanced development resources, will they still benefit from attending?
A. Yes. Many of the mentors are experienced developers with advanced skills and understanding of more difficult concepts. Your child should request guidance from mentors in what they would like to learn.
Mentors
Q. Do I need to have programming knowledge to be a mentor?
A. No. All a mentor needs are problem-solving skills, the ability to google, and a passion for technology.
Q. Will I be expected to teach at sessions?
A. No, kids will be directed to websites to learn from. Mentors will provide assistance, problem-solving, and encourage collaboration between kids.
Q. Do I need to bring anything?
A. No. Each child will have their own laptop.
Q. Do I have to attend every session to be a mentor?
A. You’re not required to attend every session, though we’d love to have you!
Q. I have kids interested in coding, can I bring them along?
A. Of course! Let us know if you want them to be in your group and we’ll make arrangements.
